Mr DeLizza Commissioned Reproductions

In the mid 2000's Cheryl Killmer discovered the connection between the Juliana tag and DeLizza & Elster Corp.  During this same time a fast growing interest in purchasing and collecting D&E jewelry developed. In response, Mr. DeLizza commissioned to have some of their original pieces reproduced.  These are some of the pieces he sold directly to meet that demand and had them available at the 2008 D&E Convention in Tampa.

Some of you are now probably thinking, well how can I tell the reproduction pieces from the original pieces.  Good news on that front.  While the overall design "look" is the same as the originals the
Twisted Wire
construction details are not the same.  You will not see figure 8's. My training file on figure 8's can be found here: https://imageevent.com/kjwshopping/detrainingalbums/figure8training  The cup settings are slightly different.  The wire overs are done with twisted wire.  The pin backs lack the pin stop used in most D&E designs.  My training album on pin backs can be found here: https://imageevent.com/kjwshopping/detrainingalbums/depinstop

The bracelets are done with the linkage at the back. They also have a push in clasp.  My D&E bracelet training can be found here: https://imageevent.com/kjwshopping/detrainingalbums/bracelettrainings/noamnotade5link

More photos of these items and all the pieces from Mr DeLizza's collection have been loaded into an image event album. Mr DeLizza's Collection.

Doreen Ryan Jewelry

After Mr DeLizza closed his factory he wanted to use his expertise to work for other designers.  So he started working with Doreen Ryan.  He says in his book on page 156-157. "For my next venture I adopted another manufacturer and put some of my expertise to work for her, and work it did.  She was a wonderful young lady, Doreen Ryan. With my help she went from being a small-time maker to being a major supplier of belts and jewelry to the industry.  I was very happy for her, and for a couple of years it went very well, but eventually it was too much for her."

These pieces are ones that were designed and manufactured by her company and these were probably given to Mr DeLizza as examples of the designs
they worked on together.

More photos of these items and all the pieces from Mr DeLizza's collection have been loaded into an image event album. Mr DeLizza's Collection.

All of the D&E from Mr DeLizza's collection will also be loaded into the: IsItJulianaJewelry database over the next few months. http://isitjulianajewelry.com/

Next weeks blog will be about the D&E pieces that Mr DeLizza had reproduced around 2007-08.  He had a company remake some of the clear rhinestone
brooches and earrings from the original design sketches.  He sold them on line through his own web site as well as selling them at the Juliana Conference held in Tampa Florida in 2008.

Juliana Prototypes

This will be my final blog about the Juliana (D&E) manufactured part of Mr DeLizza's collection.  This blog will show a couple of prototype pieces from Mr DeLizza's collection. Both pieces were attempts to expand off of their very successful rhinestones with scroll work belts.  However after getting a working prototype it was determined they could not be made for a price that would support the sale price they would bring.  So the designs were scrapped.
The first design was a small purse.  For the size of the purse it is very heavy since it is totally made of rhinestones, faux pearls, heart scroll work and what we call "H" connectors.  This purse is really a work of art.

The second is a cigarette case.  It is done with all clear rhinestones with "H" connectors.  The navettes are etched in a star pattern.  It too is very heavy and totally gorgeous.

More photos of these items and all the pieces from Mr DeLizza's collection have been loaded into an image event album. Mr DeLizza's Collection.

All of Mr DeLizza's collection will also be loaded into the: IsItJulianaJewelry database over the next few months. http://isitjulianajewelry.com/

Next weeks blog will be about the next stage in Mr DeLizza's career.  After closing his factory Mr DeLizza used his experience to help the careers of other jewelry designers.  One of which was Doreen Ryan and Mr DeLizza has in his collection pieces from her early designs.

Juliana Beaded Jewelry

Juliana (D&E) beaded jewelry falls into four categories.  The first and probably the earliest type they made are the ones you usually see which are designs with a base of rhinestones with beads hanging usually in groups of 3 from hangers.  The hangers are usually made of what we call square wire bead hangers.  Square wire bead hangers are a very important characteristic of Juliana Jewelry.  My Juliana Study Group has a training file about this characteristic at: Square Wire Hangers.  Mr DeLizza also talks about it in Chapter 5 of his book that dates to 1957-59.  He says: "In 1959 my father came up with the idea
to link beads on top of jewelry.  It was quite a look."

The second category of Juliana beaded jewelry is what Mr DeLizza calls stringing.  Mr DeLizza talks about this in Chapter 10 of his book that dates to 1974-77.  He says: "1967 and we went, again, heavily into stringing; we were becoming more and more professional at strung jewelry, . . ., and the bulk of our volume was coming from stringing and linking."

The third category is beads used as rhinestones.  D&E would take beads and glue them in settings like they were rhinestones.  This design element was used through out the history of Juliana(D&E) jewelry.

The forth category is one I usually call charm jewelry.  It are items including beads attached with rings onto chain of some sort.  These type of design were used quite often starting in the late 1970's.

Juliana (D&E) used a huge variety of different beads, from crystal, plastic, and wood.  They did different shapes.  If it could be strung and made a bold statement they would use it.

These designs shown here and many more can be purchased in my store: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/shop/MrDeLizza/18.

Jan also included with the jewelry some signed Thank You cards for jewelry purchasers.
These cards are hand signed by Mr DeLizza.  I have a limited amount of them.  For each person that purchases 10 items, or a total purchase value of $400 I will send one of these Thank You notes, while the supply lasts. The items do not have to be purchased all at one time. I will keep track of each persons purchases.
My next blog will be the final blog about the Juliana (D&E) manufactured part of Mr DeLizza's collection.  Next we will go into the companies he worked with as a consultant.  The first of these will be Doreen Ryan.

Juliana Ethnic Style Jewelry

The use of the jewelry styles of different cultures as a design element in costume jewelry has always been very popular.  Juliana (D&E) was no exception to this design style.  They made jewelry in the style of different cultures with Native American, Mayan and Egyptian Revival being some of their most used styles.  The collection from Mr DeLizza's warehouse had a few of these designs.

The ball chain designs Juliana did so often was something that lent itself to their style of ethnic designs.  The high domed cabochons they used worked very well with Egyptian Revival Designs.  They also did quite a number of charm
style designs which could take on any design style depending on the charms selected.

These designs shown here and many more can be purchased in my store: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/shop/MrDeLizza/18.

Juliana Belts

This blog will be about some of the belts that Juliana (D&E) did.  Belts were a very large part of their business and the designs ranged from huge totally rhinestone covered belts to small belts without a single rhinestone.  In his book Memoirs of a Fashion Jewelry Manufacturer Chapter 7 (1967-69) Belts, Losing Wholesale Customers; Trying to Get Hip Mr DeLizza says on page 75:"I was working with Kenneth Lane in New York and he asked if we could make a belt for him.  With all our colorful stones he thought it would be a great idea.  When I got back to the factory we tried to lay out a belt, but neither Anthony nor Zangara were able to come up with something that would work.  I went home to lunch with my father and discussed our need.
He promised to come in later and work on the project.  When he arrived at the factory he grabbed some heart-shaped scrolls and some mesh chain and in a few hours he cane up with a concept for a belt.  It had a buckle and a hook that caught on to the scrolls, making a reasonably functioning adjustable belt." Then later in the same page. "We now added belts to our line.  We made them with rhinestones for our jewelry customers and one or two with twisted mesh.  Jewelry wholesalers, at first, just rejected them out of hand, as not being their item."  Throughout that chapter he talks about trying to get the belts accepted and they were able to find new customers for the belts.
Then in Chapter 11 (1978-79) Judy, Judy, Judy; Saved by the Belts; A Split at the Factory; Discovered Friends and Family in Italy Mr DeLizza says on page 134: "We were still earning more from belts than we were from jewelry"  Then later on the same page: "We made some innovative mesh belts, Judy put together some cord belts, we made some high polished solid brass belts"  It goes on from there for at least a half a page about all the different belt designs they did.

Most of the belts I have from Mr DeLizza's collection are shown in his book and I assume are the actual belts photographed for his book.  Most date from the 1970's to late 1980's.

Juliana Figural Jewelry

Snake Upper Arm Bracelet
Cast Dragonfly with Bead Wings
Figural jewelry was always an important group for Juliana (D&E).  The materials they used in the designs of their figural jewelry range from all rhinestones to all cast designs without a rhinestone in sight.  They did animals, flowers, leaves, bugs, birds, butterflies, sea creatures, musical instruments and reptiles.  They even did human style designs like genies, and figures from story books.  They are done as brooches, pendant necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, cuff links, scarf clips, tie tacks, bolo ties and even as belts.  They were done in all sizes from under 1 inch to over 5 inches.  If they could dream it up, and if there was a market for it they would manufacture it and sell it.  Many of the designs already shown in these blogs also qualify as figurals.  It just goes to show the range of figurals manufactured by Juliana (D&E).

These designs shown here and many more can be purchased in my store: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/shop/MrDeLizza/18.

Juliana Cuff Links

When these arrived in one of the boxes from Jan I was quite excited.  I had read all the spots in Mr DeLizza's book where he talks about D&E making cuff links.  I have looked for years for them and never found any.  Now I have a whole group of different styles of Juliana cuff links.  So much fun!  I can see now from looking at them that they were designed as accompanying pieces for other designs D&E did.  I am sure these are just a few of the cuff link designs made by D&E.  So now the hunt is on to find more.
